7 October holiday destinations without flying

Some lucky kids get two weeks and most get one week of holidays. It is a bit short to consider travelling 'far away' or going through the pain of flying. So here are some suggestions for October holiday breaks that will not involve taking an airplane.

A good step for our planet, and a fun adventure with the family!

The Black Forest - Germany

Autumnal colours at about 7hours drive from Amsterdam. The Black Forest has beautiful nature with lakes, waterfalls and mountains. There are beautiful (spa) towns such as Baden-Baden, villages and also great museums.

A perfect place to enjoy a week of fresh air, german gastronomy and peace.

Legoland - Denmark

An easy win to make the kids happy. The Legoland resort in Billund is really well appointed, even for parents. The park is small and manageable in a couple of days. The village of Billund in itself must be seen and the 7h drive is easy.

Berlin - Germany

Hop in a train from Amsterdam central and 6hours later you will be in Berlin enjoying currywurst! A lot of walking around all the sights of the city, some important history, museums and great culture in general. A very easy trip to take, even with younger kids.

Ardennes

On the Belgian side or the French one, it is a great place to escape crowds and reconnect with nature. Only 4 hours away from Amsterdam makes it very accessible. Pack your walking shoes for some hikes, and visit some breweries, grottos and churches.

London - Harry Potter fans

Take the direct Eurostar from Amsterdam central station to Kings Cross and take a photo on platform 9 3/4 within less than 5 hours. Make sure you pre-book the exceptional Harry Potter experience, take a guided tour and make it a themed weekend!

Disneyland and a bit of Paris countryside

For the brave parents ready to face that, Disneyland is always a great option. Drive via Reims for some bubble shopping and head to the Halloween entertainment at Disney. Kids will love it, you might too. Head to the Paris countryside to recover and enjoy some delicious food.

The Chateaux de la Loire

The Loire Valley is not only beautiful, but it also has a number of stunning chateaux to visit: Chambord, Chenonceau and Cheverny to name just a few. Passing through Paris will make it a nice stop too. There is enough to entertain castle fans for a week.

These are just a few ideas, but for a week, there is definitely no need to go far away to experience some really special places with the kids.

Bon voyage
